In observance of the concept that "the martial art begins and ends with respect" each class begins with a bow between
the instructor and the students.
Each class starts with a series of warm up exercises designed to loosen up the muscles and prepare the student for the
actual Karate workout.
This is followed by the core of Uechi Karate, the Sanchin kata. Sanchin is a formal exercise of moving meditation
which teaches the student the basic techniques of the style and sets the foundation for all future training.
Between repetitions of Sanchin the student works on a variety of training exercises with a partner. These drills
teach the student how to use the techniques of Uechi Karate against an actual attacker.
The class continues with a series of technique exercises and basic kata (formal exercises) which teach various blocking,
punching, and kicking techniques in increasingly advanced combinations.
Again reflecting the idea that "the martial art begins and ends with respect," the end of the formal class
is marked by a ceremonial bow and the exchange of thanks between the instructor and the students.
After the completion of the formal workout, the senior students continue training for another hour or so working on the
more advanced elements of Uechi Karate. Beginning students are welcome to continue training on their own during
this period if they wish to do so.
